When I received the reference photos for Olive, I swear my heart skipped a beat. How. Freaking. Cute. Her human, Annie went above and beyond and provided really detailed reference photos AND a video so I could see her personality! What I love about this pup is her extremely sweet body language– she seems to want all the cuddles, all the time.
It brought me great joy to hear that Annie also wanted to move forward with the ear flop! I think it brings out her silly side while maintaining her sweet puppy eyes. 🙂
Finding a balance of color and adding the blacks. It’s so easy to over-do blacks in watercolor, so my method is to go in with watered down layers and build up a good coat before adding the saturated black details.
It’s a tie between her rolled out tongue with its colorful shades of pinks, purples and blues and her iris. I loved capturing the light and dripping in the colors!

WOW, your work is amazing! I can’t figure out how to use water colors for the life of me, your art just blows me away.
ohhhh my gosh this is so awesome! I wish we could have done this before our dog passed away! What a sweet memory
A vast majority of my clients hire me to paint their pets as a commemoration! If you have 3-5 photos of your pup, I can let you know if it is something we can do! <3 I’m sorry for your loss. Losing a pet always stays with you. <3
Awwww Olive is SO adorable. You really did capture her sweetness. What a beautiful work of art. And I LOVE that she kept the flipped ear. My dog used to do that and I loved it!
Dog flip ears are the cutest. Not that I sometimes force my dog’s ears to flip…… 😉
Wow! This is incredible! I love seeing the different stages of the pieces, from start to finish! What great personality, it totally shines through!
Oh my gosh… I thought this portrait was a photograph at first! I love how life-like and realistic the finished piece is! Do you solely use water-color or is it finished with colored pencil or other fine details?
I just use watercolor 🙂 Though I do know an artist who does amazing work in colored pencil! (www.kitgrayillustration.com) I’m only slightly obsessed.
This is super cool. Great work!
